  • Directive 94/9/EC or ATEX specifies new regulations for explosion protection for all types of devices for the European market.
  • This directive applies to gearmotors and motors. As of July 1, 2003, directive 94/9/EC applies without restriction to the use of gearmotors and motors within the European Union. Other European countries, such as Switzerland, have also adopted this regulation.
  • Scope
  • SEW-EURODRIVE now supplies explosion-proof gearmotors and motors only in accordance with the corresponding ATEX directive. This also applies to options and accessories in the explosion-proof version.

  • ATEX-compliant EC prototype test certificate
  • Explosion-proof AC asynchronous motors in category 2 (94/9/EG) in combination with SEW frequency inverters
  • Below is an overview of the benefits of this combination in comparison to an AC asynchronous motor in protection type "d" (EN 60079-1 flameproof enclosure).

  • It is important to observe and comply with guidelines particularly in areas containing potentially-explosive air/gas or air/dust mixtures. Thanks to many years of experience and competency in this area, SEW-EURODRIVE guarantees that the applicable guidelines are observed. Furthermore, the company’s expertise is continually being expanded to include new and further developments.
  • This basic type of approval was implemented for all 4-pole motors of category 2 from SEW-EURODRIVE, and certificates are available for all eDT and eDV motors.
  • The new approvals for the motors were performed according to the new European standards applicable to explosion protection:
  • Gas (EN 60079-0; EN 60079-7) and dust (EN 61241-0; EN 61241-1).
  • These motors meet the requirements for equipment intended for use in potentially-explosive areas of category 2 as defined in directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95). A device for direct temperature monitoring in combination with the defined parameters of the frequency inverter offers the best possible protection against excessive heating caused by an overload.

  • Compared to the nominal torque, the permitted overload value had to be changed when the frequency inverter was operated to the values given in order to guarantee thermally safe operation. Convert the currents for voltage 400 V/50 Hz in star connection and the currents for delta connection 230 V/50 Hz (400 V/87 Hz) using the factor √3.

Explosion-proof drives

Operating systems and machines in areas with potentially explosive air / gas or air / dust mixtures requires special measures. If mixture formation cannot be prevented, specially protected drives must be used. Applicable standards and regulations govern the use of equipment within existing hazard zones. They also prescribe the quality prerequisites that must be met by drive manufacturers.
